This is Diego, is three years old and is suffering from a serious illness called Leigh syndrome. Leigh syndrome is a progressive neurological disease that affects the central nervous system and especially the brain stem and cerebellum. The disease is caused by defects in the mechanism of energy production by the mitochondria, organelles that are real “power plants”. Usually it occurs in children aged between three months and two years, but can also occur later. Children affected with progressive psychomotor developmental delay, hypotonia, loss of appetite, recurrent vomiting, irritability, seizures and episodes of lactic acidosis (buildup of lactic acid in the body), which can lead to abnormal rhythms of respiratory and kidney disorders. There is no cure for solutions. In most cases, the life expectancy is reduced to a few years.
